Goal of the seminar

The AOA Seminar—Basic Principles of Fracture Management is designed to provide fundamental knowledge and guidelines for basic nonoperative and operative treatment of common fractures and to enable participants to recognize those fractures that need nonoperative or operative treatment in a specialist unit

Target audience

This seminar is targeted to young trauma surgeons interested in developing their knowledge and skills in operative fracture management.

This seminar will address:

  • Primary trauma care
  • Fracture healing
  • Fracture classification
  • Treatment of shaft fractures
  • Treatment of articular fractures
  • Demonstrations on operative and nonoperative fracture fixation techniques

Seminar objectives

By the end of the seminar participants will be able to:

  • Outline the importance of operative trauma care
  • Describe and classify common fractures
  • Outline the importance of preservation of the soft tissues
  • Apply different reduction techniques
  • Apply nonoperative and operative techniques, such as internal and external fracture fixation;plaster and traction
  • Anticipate potential pitfalls and complications in fracture care
  • Identify fracture complications
  • Formulate systems for maintaining safe standards of practice
  • Use professional networks to share ideas, challenge poor practice and provide support
